Retin-A
Sometime people may be dependent on their facial appearance for the sake of their professions. Actors for example are always desirous on maintaining their facial looks. However, they are not the only ones that need to look young. Generally, all people want to look younger when they feel that wrinkles are increasing on their faces. When one suffers his skin with wrinkles, Retin-A is found very effective anti-aging skin and its use for at least 3 weeks removes wrinkles from the skin.
Ingredients:
The main ingredient in Retin-A is Tretinoin, a yellowish or orange crystalline powder with a pleasant odor due to its floral effect. Tretinoin is dissolvable in dimethylsulfoxide but slightly soluble in polyethylene glycol 400 and completely soluble in 100% ethanol. It is not dissolvable in water, mineral oil and glycerin.
Tretinoin’s chemical name
(all-E)-3,7?dimethyl-9?(2,6,6?trimethyl-1?cyclonexen-1?yl)-2,4,6,8?nonatetraenoic acid.
It is also known as all-trans?retinoic acid (C20H28O2; molecular weight 300.44 Vitamin A acid.
Chemistry:
Despite Tretinoin’s crystalline powder form, Retin-A is also available in cream, Gel and liquid form to treat acne problems. Retin-A Gel has the main ingredient Retinoic acid and Vitamin A acid in two possible strengths; either 0.025% or 0.01% by weight. It will also be in a gel of Hydroxypropyl Cellulose, Butylated Hydroxytoluene and Alcohol 90% w/w. Retin-A Cream containing retuning, has the ingredient in three types of strengths: 0.1%, 0.05%, or 0.025% by weight. It is in a Hydrophilic Cream consisting of:
- Satiric Acid
- Isopropyl Microstate
- Polyoxyl 40 Stearate
- Stearyl Alcohol
- Xanthan Gum
- Sorbic Acid
- Butylated Hydroxytoluene
- Purified Water
Retin-A liquid contains Tretinoin with a 0.05% weight, Butylated
Hydroxytoluene, Polyethylene Glycol 400 and Alcohol.
Application of Retin-A
- Retin-A should always be applied using a cotton applicator to apply a fine layer of the cream on your skin. You should apply your skin with Retin-A
once a day because more applications of Retin-A will not increase the
effectiveness of the cream.
2. Retin-A produces its results in due course of time. Retin-A begins to take effect and reduce the visibility of deep-set wrinkles. You are expected to see visible changes in your skin after three weeks with consistent use of Retin-A.
Cautions when using Retin A
Retin-A should NOT be used while taking other alcoholic drugs to avoid alcohol interference. Similarly Retin-A should not be used with other skin products that contain any of the following ingredients:
- Sulfur
- Salicylic Acid
- Resorcinol
Following precautions should be taken to avoid drying and irritation to the skin.
- If you miss out a dose of Retin-A, you should take the missed
dose as soon as possible but before the next dose. Do not
"double-up" and take both doses close together.
- Avoid the use of Retin-A if you have a rash that has been caused by
exfoliant or keratolytic treatments.
- Remove all make up before using Retin-A.
- In case of pregnancy Retin-A is safe to apply but is advised to consult your doctor first.
- Retin-A should be kept out of reach of children. It should
not go in one’s eyes, mouth or open sores. It should be kept at room temperature and not be exposed to sunlight.
- If Retin-A accidentally spreads on to skin areas that are not supposed to be exposed to it, wash that area immediately with water. If you wish to use other acne treatments alongside Retin-A, you should consult your doctor first. This will prevent your skin from any kind of interaction between acne treatment and Retin-A.
- You are not advised to use Retin–A one day before or after being exposed to too much sunlight. Even exposure to indoor bright lamps and cold air are not recommended. If you have any reactions to Retin-A, you should visit your doctor immediately.
- To avoid any undue reaction on your skin, first you would have to try it
on a portion of your skin.
- Avoid smoking while using Retin-A as it is flammable.
